My process of building new satisfying behaviors (I call Mind Muscles™) sync right up with his self-coaching guide. To my mind Brett’s strength is in the area of trader development where he’s able to bring in all that research and tie it in with his own experience working with traders. Like I said before, I don’t even always agree with him there, but I’ve found that’s more often a case of how things are expressed rather than methodologies and approaches. Brett is a very well known trading psychology coach, and has consulted to some of the biggest names in the industry.
We prepare general and tailored market reports, publish consumer guides, produce an annual global and virtual conference, and provide strategic advisory services. Like the Traderfeed blog, it’s completely packed with inspiring information and ideas. One thing I particularly like is that it is broken up into 101 short “lessons”. Personally, I find long chapters difficult to get through when reading a book. The average lesson is only about 3 pages long – perfect for someone with a short attention span or little time for reading.

That way, if you break the rules you can evaluate yourself in terms of that. If consistently breaking one rule, have to find out why. Are you doing the right thing and the rule needs to be changed because it was a bad rule anyway? Or is the where to invest 1000 dollars rule preventing you from doing something bad? Either way, the existence of the rule draws a line in the sand in terms of evaluating whether or not and how you do and don’t follow it. He suggests that a trader list your most important rules.
You need to define specific changes and work on the one or two that will most impact your trading results. He states that it is not just enough to set goals you need a way to track them. So, one of my goals this week is The Daily Trading Coach to use limit orders rather than market orders, tried today, but didn’t get filled right away. Tomorrow I will spend a little more time determining the best price I can reasonably expect and place an order based on that.

I try to look on his work objectively, though, as I would with anyone else. It is, as the title suggests, broken up into lessons which are then grouped into sections The Daily Trading Coach of related topics. Brett suggests in the introduction that the book isn’t really intended to be read straight through, but rather by lesson or section as needed.

It might have you wondering how you’ll ever get through it all as it sounds very intense. I first linked up with Brett back in 2005 when I was the Content Editor for Trade2Win and he was an article contributor. That was when I was writing The Essentials of Trading. Knowing Brett’s background working in new trader development, I asked him to give the original draft a look.
Brett draws on research and experience working with traders in explaining how to deal with the different types of circumstances traders can find themselves in, but doesn’t let it become an academic discourse. Each lesson has action items, so the reader can not just understand what’s causing them to feel they way they feel or act the way they act, but to also address it. It’s basically a mix of psychology, common sense, and actionable ideas to help traders of all kinds improve their trading. One section that may be of particular interest to readers of this blog is the last chapter that serves as an instruction manual on how to use Excel to download and test historical patterns.

The last group are books that I refer to over and over throughout the years. They are sometimes inspirational, sometimes instructional, and sometimes both. I’ve just finished Dr. Steenbarger’s “Daily Trading Coach” and I now have a new book to add to my elite shelf.
His highlights it on his blog when it gives a good looking signal, but nothing when it contradicts the market. Brett is definitely very quantitative in the limited market writing he’s done that I’ve seen. I can appreciate the value of that to a certain extent, but it’s also a very short time frame, which I generally don’t focus on.

Past performance is not indicative of future results. Another benefit of the book is that you can read a lesson and the associated task in a short break from trading. If you have let yourself down, got into some negative self talk, etc. just reach for the book and apply the relevant lesson. This has the effect of immediately becoming objective about the issue at hand.
