- Hacking For Change: 3 Questions With Code For America Fellow Erik Michaels
If RubyBench existed in the past, it could have prevented the performance regression in require that snuck into Ruby 1.9. If talking about the most terrible architectural solution/code I have ever met, the first thing that comes to mind is the way Rails performs uniqueness validation. For those who don’t know, it just does just does a SELECT to see whether the field already exists before doing an INSERT. The first problem is that these two operations are not done in a transaction, so there’s a race condition that allows non-unique values to be inserted. However, transactions are not a good solution either, since they would cause too much table locking. The best solution is simply to create a UNIQUE INDEX on that field in the database, which guarantees correctness and optimal performance.

Three years ago I wrote that podcast players had replaced Twitter clients as the leading UI playground — the space where there’s a lot of competition and new ideas being tried out. Overcast and Castro keep getting better, and Breaker is a new and cloud deployment interesting take. Breaker is hoping to break that stalemate by adding support for JSON Feed in our latest release. Unlike other features that differentiate Breaker, we encourage our competitors to follow our lead in this area. The sooner all podcast players support JSON Feed, the better positioned the entire podcast ecosystem will be for the decades to come.

Chef lived up to its reputation for being incredibly powerful, but it took me longer than I’d hoped to really understand how to use it. On August 31, after the first-ever day of classes at CMU-Q, a videoconference was held between these two Carnegie Mellon campuses in our newly-opened Posner Center. This allowed students on both sides to ask each other questions and start building partnerships.

This past June, I visited Carnegie Mellon in Qatar (CMU-Q), our newest branch campus. I am excited about the opportunities this campus will offer and the ways that it will be shaped by its first class. While I was there, I met some of the students of this class and will be working with them to establish their own Student Government. I am looking forward to this and future collaboration with our peers in Qatar.

The Nieman Journalism Lab is a collaborative attempt to figure out how quality journalism can survive and thrive in the Internet age. I started working on Ruby full-time in 2006, when my team decided to port our web application from PHP to Rails. I believe we were using Ruby version 1.8.4 with Mongrel as the web server. In retrospect, it’s hard to imagine working on Ruby without these tools that I now use on a daily basis. A couple months ago, we introduced the ability to create your own, shareable playlists on Breaker. Since then, the Breaker community has created hundreds of public playlists.
In an ongoing effort to improve student space on campus and involve more students in Student Government, I have created the Committee on University Center Renovations. It is my hope that the plan will be complete by November, so that the changes can be implemented by the start of the spring semester. I would like the committee to be composed largely of students unconnected with Student Government, to bring in new ideas. There are also a lot of poorly maintained and outdated code in the Ruby standard library. I’d like to see the standard library refreshed to use newer language features, like keyword arguments. If these features are not useful enough for the core/standard libraries, they should be removed from the language, since they add unnecessary complexity. The ability for Ruby to catch some type errors at startup time would be nice. I’ve started using Crystal instead of Ruby, which I will be giving my talk about, since it has most of the features I like about the Ruby language without many of the features I dislike.
I told Eric that Breaker had an upcoming hackweek and that we were looking for projects to help with the coronavirus relief effort. The Rails approach to uniqueness validation is an impedance mismatch that gives the user a false sense of security. I think my background working in startups and open source was well-suited to Code for America, especially in the first year of the program. I’ve always been very enthusiastic about the organization’s mission and I think that enthusiasm showed through how to build a gps app on my application. In general, I believe that technology has the power to make things better and that government, in particular, can be made better and more efficient through software. I was recently reminded of this while waiting on a long line at the Department of Motor Vehicles. ” My application reflected my desire to actually do something about that question.

One idea that came out of this discussion was an exchange program that would allow students from CMU-Q to study for a semester in Pittsburgh, and vice versa. I will be working to set up another videoconference with CMU-Q in the near future. If you are on a personal connection, like at home, you can run an anti-virus scan on your device to make sure it is not infected with malware. The most spectacular Ruby news in 2014 was the creation of RubyBench.org by Alan Guo Xiang Tan. It is an incredibly valuable (and long-overdue) contribution to the Ruby community.
